How to get the Wireless network to work on the PSP

My PSP arrived last week courtesy of
yes absolutely free of charge.
I also bought a game as well with some of the other credits. Take a look here,
this will give you a few ideas (you do not have to login or register or anything
like that) on how to earn your
.
Well here is what I have found out......
There seems to be scant info on this topic as I have found loads of entries on forums with many users struggling to connect the PSP to the Internet via a wireless router.
My Router is a LINKSYS WRT54GS.
I used to have a NETGEAR Wireless router but that used to crash and cause me
problems so I abandoned it.
What is WiFi.

A wireless network only exists within 50-100 feet of the Wireless
Access
point/Wireless Router. You need a wireless router such as a Linksys
WRT54GS to have a wireless access point unless there is a hotspot close by.
First
of all you need to know what are your choices.
AD-HOC and INFRASTRUCTURE modes.
AD-HOC is for PSP to PSP
INFRASTRUCTURE is for PSP to Wireless Router (TIP![]()
choose
this to connect to the wireless router)

Make
sure the WLAN switch is turned on located on the left of your PSP. And if you
want it to work to its full power, go to the power save menu and turn the power
save setting off for WLAN.
for an open Network (no security) :Scroll down to
Network
Settings,
select
Infrastructure Mode.
click
on Connection 1
enter a connection name
WLAN
Settings: Scan
click on the network you want to connect to, there may be more than 1 especially
if you live in a busy area.
In some cases the SSID (name of network) may be hidden. If that is the case ask Admin (your DAD if he looks after the wireless router)for the SSID.
select
your WLAN Security Setting (on an open network, select None)
Address
Settings: Easy
Easy uses DHCP, otherwise you need to setup IP, DNS etc manually.
Press
The x Button To Save Changes.
once you get to here it may be worthwhile using the test function....do it!!! If this fails no point trying Internet functions as you would not get far.
Now don't forget that the Wireless Network should always be secured. So how is this done.
MAC Filtering:Usually you only allow a known piece of Kit (PS, Laptop or whatever that can connect to your wireless network). To restrict using this method you need to know the MAC address of the device (this is usally 12 hex digits :Physical Address: 00-13-63-A4-6F-EE ).To find the MAC address of your PC from the CMD prompt type IPCONFIG /all. So whoever is the administrator for the wireless router will allow the MAC address of your PSP to get access.
Next is the security. This I have done using WEP for my network. Unfortunately there seems to be loads of issues with the PSP as mentioned in many forums. With WEP you have a choice of SHARED key or AUTO mode. Tried all possibilities with shared key but it would not work. By the way I have 3 other PCs working using this method with no issues, so why does the PSP have these issues...ask SONY. Once I setup the security to use AUTO method it all burst into life and it is working quite well. One Step which needs to be done for a WEP secured network is to enter the KEY manually into the PSP (my one has a 26 Hex digit key).
Another method of security is WPA. I have not tried WPA as yet, this is a newer standard than WEP. I found the comments below on a forum so beware.
I have a Linksys WRT54G router but my PSP will
not connect using WPA.First you need firmware
2.00 to make use of WPA. Second there is a
bug with the newer 4.xx.xx firmware ont he Linksys WRT routers.
Downgrade to v3.03.6 and WPA will work just fine.
1)First install firmware 3.03 on your PSP, this allows you to use WPA
encryption, much more secure. For the following refer to the manual for
your wireless access point/router.
2)Next, change the SSID from the default, if your the default its easy to guess your network name.
3)Now disable SSID broadcast. Stops people accidently finding you.
4)Enable WPA encryption. Make sure its Pre Shared Key and TKIP.
5)Enable MAC address filtering and enter all the MAC address's of your wireless cards including your PSP.
6)Change the admin password on your router. By default its password and
if you havnt changed it like the 3 networks within range of me its
going to be admin
